Once upon a time there were three story-generating algorithms. The first story-generating algorithm wrote a long and complicated story, full of twists and turns, in which the second algorithm appeared and wrote a story. The second algorithm’s story was shorter, and not so complicated, but it featured the third algorithm in action. And the third algorithm wrote this story.

Science vs. mathematics?

The greatest conflicts are not usually between right and wrong, but between two conflicting positive values. The quantitative sciences depend on mathematics as an essential tool, and mathematics depends on the sciences for fruitful new problems. But these two natural allies can fall into discord when the subject is ontology, the study of what most fundamentally exists and what is most real. (more…)
